The Washington State Cougars easily handled Utah State on Saturday in what was a bit of a snoozer — which is weird when you're talking about a game that was clearly never in doubt. We suppose that will happen when the game kicks off at 7 p.m. and features a third quarter that lasted a whole damn hour by itself thanks to a host of factors, not the least of which was replay review ineptitude.

The team's conservatism on offense seems to be by design, which sometimes can lead to a feeling that the Cougs are underachieving, but it’s awfully difficult to argue with the results: WSU has now picked up its eighth win of the season in nine contests, and the Cougs are up to No. 18 in the College Football Playoff rankings

New Mexico awaits this weekend, presenting a little bit of a weird challenge — WSU is clearly the better team, but the Lobos are dangerous enough on offense to come up and bite the Cougars if they’re not on their game.

Other topics of discussion

  • Beer: Jeff — Hop to Go! Fresh Hop with Centennial hops (Urban Family); Craig — Electric Sculpture Fresh Hop (Here Today).

  • Men’s basketball: The Cougs are off to a flying start, winning their first three — the last two in convincing fashion, including dominating a pretty good Bradley. But a big test awaits on Friday: The Iowa Hawkeyes.

  • Women’s basketball: The start here is a bit less flying, but that’s largely due to getting whipped (again) by our eternal nemesis, Stanford. Probably not much to read into that, and they look pretty darn good otherwise.

  • Soccer: The season is over, and that’s probably only because of a couple of late collapses that are keeping them out of the postseason conversation. Alas.

  • Volleyball: The season has four games left, including a finale against WCC first place LMU at home … could the Cougs still work their way into the NCAAs?
